As the innocent Smits turned his back and bent down over a chest in which he kept his goods, the savage dealt him a terrible blow and killed him. According to Indian ideas, no wrong had been done. On the contrary, the young man probably felt quite at peace with his conscience, and offered thanks to the WILLIAM KIEFT, 1638-1647 41 Great Spirit because lie had at last avenged his uncle's murder.
Kieft at once sent to the chief of the tribe, and demanded that the offender be given up.
