The law promises to fine not less than $S,ooo and to imprison for at least a year any man who gives anything of value, even a piece of meat, to a Government employee to influence him in the performance of his duties; it is stricter still with such employees, for it holds over them the menace of similar fine and imprisonment if they accept anything of value, no matter what the intent of the donor or the purpose of the gift may be. It is thus dangerous for the packer to bribe, and it is more dangerous still for the employee to accept.
