To Baker with about 2000infantry and four guns, was assigned the task of attacking the Afghanright on the projecting spur and ridge, forcing back and dispersing thatflank; and then, having reached the right of the Afghan main position onthe farthest and loftiest range, he was to wheel to his right and sweepits defenders from the chain of summits.
Baker moved out toward his left front against the eminences held by theAfghan right wing, which Nek Mahomed, having discerned the character ofRoberts'... tactics, was now reinforcing with great activity. The 72dHighlanders led the attack, supported vigorously by the 5th Goorkhas andthe 5th Punjaub Infantry. The resistance of the Afghans was stubborn, especially opposite our extreme left, whence from behind their sungahs ona steep hill they poured a heavy fire on the assailants. A yet heavierfire came from a detached knoll on Baker's right, which the artilleryfire gradually beat down. The Afghans continued to hold the advancedridge constituting their first position until two o'clock, when a directattack, accompanied by a double flanking fire, compelled theirwithdrawal.
