An excess or deficiency of mercury weakens an amalgam. It would appear that the conditions which bring about the most perfect union of the metals produce the greatest changes of bulk in those formulse in which changes of bulk occur. An alloy the amalgam of which neither shrinks nor expands cannot be made to do so by changes in the amount of mercury em- ployed.
