Methods based upon the decomposition of soap by car- bonates and other salts of calcium and magnesium in solu- tion in water were formerly in general use, but have been shown in recent years to be so unreliable that the process will not be here described. The results are without value when waters contain carbonates of sodium or potassium or their hydr...oxides, or if calcium hydroxide or much mag- THE ANALYSIS OF WATER 51 nesium are present. It is therefore evident that the method is restricted to comparatively soft waters in which there are in solution only small amounts of the carbonates of calcium and magnesium alone.

Carbon dioxide is present in waters as free carbon dioxide in solution and in combination with bases as pri- mary carbonates, now termed "carbon dioxide as bicar- bonates, " formerly reported as "half-bound" carbon diox ide; and in combination with bases as normal carbonates, formerly reported as "Fixed carbon dioxide.
