It is said there, that regeneration and sanctification are effects of the creating and renewing agency of the Holy Spirit. The meaning is that re- generation is an instantaneous work. The men who framed and were interested in the Creed of the Seminary believed that God the Holy Spirit was the sole Author of regeneration ; the first mover of it ; the sole director of all other agencies in the work ; and that sole Author, implied a direct and immediate interposition in the work. Thus they regarde...d regeneration as a special work of God.
But in opposition to this view of regeneration in the Seminary Creed, regeneration is represented in Progressive Orthodoxy as a gradual work, as the imitation of Christ as the pattern under the influence of the Holy Spirit working on the soul by motive ; the Spirit working toward Christ in the reconstruction of char- acter.
According to the Creed, the Holy Spirit uses all of Divine truth, as influence, and instrument, and motive ; while at the same time, he has supernatural agency over and above motive, and over and above the influence of truth.
