To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:

SUB-DIV. II. ] THE BEING AND THE ATTRIBUTES. 101 This is disconformity to the true nature of man, and, so, to the nature of God. How, then, could it lead to happiness, or aught but the reverse of happiness ? How could disconformity, in im- portant regards, to the God-like, lead but to some other un-God-like disconformity ? Could the vice, the unlike God, lead to happiness, the like God ? 9. Thus the question which was raised a is to be met with a decided negative, approaching it by the track pu...rsued. But while throughout the preceding, the elements of Virtue and Vice pre- dominated ; in what is to follow, certain other elements will be the predominating ones. 10. The question, then, being looked at with the element of Happiness, and that of Misery, its reverse, prominently in the foreground ; it is fortunate that we can, at once, answer, that any alternative, such as the question presents, cannot be entertained for one moment. The connection between virtue and happiness, and vice and misery, is indissoluble, being grounded in the very nature of things which are themselves immutable.
