In 1554 (1st and 2d Philip and Mary, c. 5), corn is forbidden to be exported except when the price of wheat did not exceed 6s. 8d., rye 4s., and barley 3s. per quarter — the coin being almost of ova present standard.
In 1557, a Mexican miner dis...covers the method of treating silver ores with mercury. In 1558 (1st Eliza- beth, c. 11), wheat rises to 23s. a-quarter, but grain may still be exported when the price of wheat is not above 6s. 8d., rye 4s., and barley 3s. a-quarter. These last prices appear still to be considered a fair medium for both producers and consumers.
In 1562, we find thirty-five mines at work in Mexico, where " cold amalgamation " was practised. In 1563 (5th Elizabeth), grain may be exported when the price of wheat did not exceed 10s., rye, pease, and beans, 8s., and malt 6s.
