After the departure of the accountant for England, 1 receiv* ed from different quarters many tokens of assurance that the Company would soon be broke up; in consequence my reso- lution to return home seemed the more necessary. But an event soon after took place, which drove me to my wit's end.
The Directors of the Company, without apprising me, or- dered the bank of York not to answer my drafts ; what they meant... by this disgraceful and embarrassing order they knew best themselves, but I received the intimation as another proof that the Company was near its dissolution, and something like a reason to apprehend that the misfortune was to be re- presented as originating with me. f do not insinuate that it was 60 intended, but the Directors ought to have seen that it would have this efiect.
Mortifying as this measure undoubtedly was, it fiiiled ef its effect, for I was so exasperated, that I resolved, as I was not going home, to disregard any instructions coming from the Court, and to attend only to what I thought was for the good of the proprietary.
