If, when there is no demand for an unusual amount of circulating currency, bank-notes cotdd be issued and kept in circulation in substitution for lawful money, the lawful money displaced by the notes would accumulate in the banks, thereby increasing their reserves and causing a large increase of their power to grant credits.
