When the patent was issued it was for Kanawha County, this part of Kentucky then being in that jurisdiction. This was before Kentucky 192 THE BIO SANDY VALLEY, County had been established. The tract of land embraced in the Chapman purchase from French, now owned by Lieutenant. Chapman, is situated on the west bank of the Sandy, five miles above Louisa, and is known as the Gavitt Place.
