14, Hasbrouck Institute, then located in Lower Grand street, Jersey City. He was afterward a student at Phillips Acad- emy, Andover, Massachusetts, from which institution he was graduated in 1875. '^^ then entered Yale L'niversity but on ac- count of the death of his father and the necessity of looking after his mother's af- fairs, he was unable to complete his studies there. Returning home, he took up the study of law in the office of William Brink- erhofF, then in the First National Bank Buil...ding, where he became associated with William H. Corbin, William D. Edwards, John S. Mabon and Frederick S. Fram- bach, forming close professional and per- sonal friendships that were never subse- quently broken. Mr. Bumsted was admit- ted to the bar of New Jersey in 1879 and immediately established himself in practice in his native city. After building up an ex- cellent office and real estate clientage, and acquiring an enviable repute, he became a member of the firm of \\'allis, Edwards & Bumsted in 1888, returning to the First National Bank Building, in which he has since remained.
