Mr. Sheridan^ from a variety of documents, chiefly from the minutes of the supreme council, of which Mr. Hastings had been the presi- dent, explained the true state of that question. Treasure, which was the source of all the cruelties, was the original pretence which Mr. Hastings had made to the company for this proceeding, and through the whole of his conduct he had alledged the principles of Mahomedanism in ml* ligation of the severities he had sanctioned ; as if he meant to insinuate, that t...here was something in Ma- bomedanism, which rendered it impious for a son not to plunder his mother. But to shew how the case precisely stood, when Mr. Hastings began the attacks, Mf« Sheridan read the minutes of General Clavjuung, Colonel ToNsoN, and Mr. Francis, who severally spoke of a claim which had been made by the Nabob on Bb(n$ Begum, in the year 1775, amounting to two and one half lacks : the opinion contained in these minutes was, that women were, on the death of their husbands, entitled by the Mahomedan law only to the property within the Zenana where they lived.
