What reading level is The British Coal Industry book?
To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:

It is therefore, as a rule, the aim of good managers to train up the underground workmen so that, beginning as boys, they shall go through all the stages in between door-trapping and coal-getting before they arrive at the top of their ladder and become colliers. Usually a lad will commence at some simple work such as looking after the air- doors, then he will work under a foreman on the haulage roads, then he will go to the working stalls and fill tubs, then he will work actually at the face as... a drawer, i. E. He will be employed in clearing the face of the coal got by the collier. Finally he will become a collier. There is thus no question of apprenticeship or long-continued training at the specific trade of coal-getting. As a result it some- times happens that the workman is far less skilled than he would have been had he been taught his trade by a first-class man. It is a mystery this trade of coal-getting, which is 'picked up' rather than learnt, with the result that in the same mine and in the same district of the same mine it is possible to find working stalls which tell plainly to all who can see and understand, the one that a master workman works there, the other that a careless and incompetent labourer is digging coals for hire.
