... contained eighty marks of gold, a handseax which contained as much, liorses and dogs, and the land called Parent (Darente) ; but there is no mention of a church. This land was afterwards exchanged with Canter- bury for the manor of Lambeth, in the time of Richard I. , and at that time the church of Darent is distinctly mentioned as part of the property exchanged. As Bishop Gundulpli lived until 1107, or during the first seven years of the reign of Henry I. , it is quite possible that this church may have been his work at the end of his life.
