Meeting on the 10th of April 1838, and having de- clared in a short speech : " I have come to the con- viction that there is no necessity to take strong drinks for any one in good health I advise you to follow my example :" he approached the table where the pledge book was laid, and said in a voice that is remembered by some to this day. " Here goes, in the name of God!" and signed his name. Every one knows how that small mustard seed became a mighty tree; how many hundreds of thousands in Europe and America were benefitted by taking the pledge of Total Abstinence.
