The Single Retort type.
Fig. 10 shows a purely diagrammatic arrange- ment of a multi-retort generator. The retorts are ex- ternally heated by means of a gas producer incorporated in the retort bench. The even heating of the retorts is secured by the use of refractory baffles (not shown) and by the admission of air for the proper combustion of the producer gas at different points.
94 MANUFACTURE OF HYDROGEN The retorts are arranged so that either blue water gas or steam can be passed through the
...m by the opera- tion of the valves A and B.
During the reducing stage the valves A and D are open, and B and C shut ; thus the reducing gas passes through the oxide, and since in practice the whole of the carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the water gas is not used up in its passage through the retorts, it is passed A B FIG. 10.
back outside of them, giving up its remaining heat, and consequently contributing to the external heating.
On the reducing stage being complete, the valves A and D are closed, and B and C opened ; steam passes through the retorts, and hydrogen issues past the valve C to the water seal, and thence to scrubbers and purifiers, and finally to the gasholder.
