Formaldehyde This is followed by a certain amount of further dehydrogenation 3 HCHO = and subsequent oxidation, which may be more or less complete according to circumstances. Thus : = H 2 O + CO 2 .
The reaction, when once started, is self-supporting and lamps have been constructed for this purpose. 4 A pretty variation of this experiment for popular demonstration, consists in suspending by means of SURFACE CATALYSIS 91 a copper wire a star-shaped piece of platinum-foil from a glass support in a tumbler or other suitable glass vessel, containing some perfumed alcohol.
