To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:

One is singled from the herd by the keeper, and then the men drive it to a certain part of the Park where Digitized by VjOOQIC The Zebu and Asiatic Buffalo. 185 there are concealed marksmen, by whom it is soon dispatched.
The Zebu, or Brahmbv Bull, is considered a sacred animal wherever the Brahmins teach their heathen faith. It is well known by the fatty hump between its shoulders, which in some weighs as much as fifty pounds. It is a gentle creature, about the size of our English cattle, and
...of many colors, but the white is the most highly valued. The poor Hindoos treat it with great reverence, believing it was the first animal God created ; they have, as may be shown from the sculptures in India, worshiped it for many thousands of years. The Zebu may tread down a field of corn, devour all the fruit in a garden, walk into a shop and help itself to whatever it please, or lie down in a narrow street, and yet no one must drive it off^ or disturb it in any way. And so we see that what was designed by God to be a blessing, is turned into a curse through the igno- rance of the teachers of the people ; for in those dis- tricts where the Brahmin priests have no power, the !^ebu is very useful both for labor and for food.
