We need not fear to bring a sensible thought and sober deed to the child's attention. All play and no work makes many a "Jack" a "good-for-noth- ing" for life. At about ten years hard memory work should be done on the Bible, the Catechism, and many other things of this kind. No explanation, just pure memory work ; but plenty of it. 3. WHAT CAN BE DONE DUR...ING THE ETH- ICAL PERIOD? This period arises at about the time of adolescence, or at about ten or twelve years of age. We have previously noted the rad- ical changes which take place in the beginning of this period changes in both body and mind. We now plead for adaptation of the methods of train- ing to the new activities and powers of the child. We must remember that the child has now become a fully conscious, reasonable, personally respon- sible being. We must address him as such. The 166 THE CHILD'S RELIGIOUS LIFE change in our methods must be as radical as the change in the being to be trained.
