Clayremonde, daughter of de Precourt, vows to revenge her father upon Arnoul Du Rosier "qu'elle tenoit Fun des homicides de son pere, destinant sa vie a ceste seule action pour mourir plus contente apres. " She proclaims that her hand is promised to any knight who will vanquish Arnoul, — a situation which is reproduced in Corneille's Cid where Chimene says : "A tous vos chevaliers je demande sa tete; Qui, qu' un d'eux me 1' apporte, et je suis sa conquete ; Qu'ils le combattent, sire, et le com...bat fini, J'epouse le vainqueur, si Rodrigue est puni. " Three of her suitors fight Arnoul, but are killed and, at last, Clayremonde resolves to take revenge herself. She and her servant, Allonne, disguised as men, present themselves at Arnoul's castle as lute-players, under the assumed names of Herman (Clayremonde) and Fourbin (Allonne). They are well received, and almost instantly Clayremonde (Herman) falls in love with Arnoul. Now begins in her heart the struggle between love and hatred and what was considered the duty of revenge.
