Ironton was on a high plateau about half a mile south of the en tran...ce to the gap, and at the foot of the hill just south of town the road to Arcadia crossed a small creek that flowed off in a southeast direction into the beautiful val ley of Arcadia. A small run from the north entered this creek just east of town, and others from the south west and the north entered it a short distance west of town. A hundred yards or so north of Arcadia, and just east of the road from Ironton to Arcadia, and north of the Arcadia and Fredericktown road, on an elevated position, there was an old, unfinished earthwork called Fort Curtis.
