But do we not hereby annul the promise in Gen. Xv. 16 ? By no means, for surely this pro- mise is strictly . Fulfilled, if any of the fourth generation are living at the Exodus, which they certainly are ; Moses and Aaron, for example.
But again, Colenso's calculation includes only the sons of Jacob ; it takes no account of his servants, or retainers : and yet I do not see how we can suppose these to have been excluded. Colenso indeed says that he had none. But what then had become of them ? He ...certainly once had some (Gen. Xxxii. 5, 16) ; and !, it was not likely that they would have been left behind to perish of hunger in Chanaan. Pro- bably they are included under the title, "my father's house" as distinguished from " my brethren" in Gen. Xlvi. 31. They would have been circumcised (Gen. Xvii. 12, 23), and though not reckoned among the pure seed of Israel, would certainly have been among the number of " the fighting men, " being reckoned with that particular tribe to which their masters belonged.
