PLACENTA, ADHESION OF.
Usually the last efforts to expel the child detach the placenta : but sometimes, from morbid causes, or more than usual firmness in the attachment, this sepa- ration is not effected. If the separation is in part only, there is more or less flooding ; but little or none if the whole placental mass is adhered. This state of matters is accompanied by irregular action of the uterus, or what is worse, inertia ; the placenta may be retained days, or even weeks ; and may occur i
...n succeeding pregnancies. If a female has suffered from this circum- stance, her attendant should be prompt in his visits at succeeding labours.
Cause. — May arise from inflammation.
Symptoms. — Not positively known till the child is delivered ; no advance by traction of the cord ; the cord advances during a pain, but retreats again.
Treatment. — Avoid strong traction ; outward friction, grasping, or kneading the uterus may succeed, if there is no hcemorrJiage ; and sometimes a dose of ergot may be useful.
