Under these exercises the mind is apt to be depressed beyond measure; the soul, afraid of acting presumptuously, in laying hold of consolation, is ready, strangely ready, to sink beneath the waves of dark despair. If any offer consolation, like Rachel on the loss of her children, he " refuseth to be comforted." The spirit, at some such sea- sons, is so dejected, it is as if all must be given up.
