Thomson was personally opposed to a solution which would turn over the clergy reserves to education, and the legislative council had all along rejected such a proposal. He could not bring himself to sanction the transference to any other object of lands granted for a religious purpose, and he beheved any biU to that effect would be disallowed by the imperial cabinet.
