" 43. Having heard this, they asked, " If we become your friends, how will you think fit to treat us?" Cyrus replied, "I shall think fit both to do you good offices, and to receive them from you. " The Egyptians then again asked, "What good offices?" Cyrus replied, " As long as the war continues, I will give you larger pay than you now receive ; and when we have peace, I will give to every one of you that will stay with me lands, cities, women, and ser- vants.
