Major Connoway did not achieve his ambition. The War Office saw fit to appoint a new colonel, a young man, who possessed both ideas and courtesy. Under his com- mand the mess became habitable and the battalion was transformed from a discontented mob to an extremely efficient unit. Quite soon after his arrival, he had an important interview with the major, which somewhat took the wind out of that gentleman's sails, and thereafter the poor thinker, from being actively objectionable, lapsed into a boring nonentity.
