The cry of popery, against stated ecclesiastical councils, is just as senseless, as the cry of despotism would be, against the constitution of the United States. The one, is a volun- tary civil compact, for general purposes, that indepen- dent states could not achieve but by union : and the other, is a voluntary compact, for religious purposes, that independent churches cannot achieve, but by union.
