If there had been any direction to run, he would have spurred his horse and gone; he began to hope that the village had someone who knew how properly to kill vampires. There were towns that had become fascinated by a victim who could be displayed in agony for so long, in so many unique ways.
But nothing of the kind happened; the column simply marched on, trailing dust and silence.
