A black marble sphinx, of the time of Amunoph III., was probably brought over at the same time as these columns. Its calm dignified repose contrasts curiously with the two lively, snapping, snarling Lions of St. Mark, which lie close to their ancient and venerable cousin.

The proportions are beautiful, and the execution of the capitals, friezes, and under ornamentation of the roof is very good.
