11 VARYING COST OF RAILWAY OPERATIONS.
As the cost is not uniform upon any one line, it follows that upon different roads there must be great variation. Yet the present law im- poses the same rates per mile upon all the roads operated by each company. It will not be
...affirmed that the cost of operation is the same upon each one or upon any two of these lines. For the year ending December 31, 1874, the expenses per mile run varied, on the Milwaukee & St. Paul Railway, from $1, 17 on the LaCrosse Division to $1. 42 on the Prairie du Chien and $1. 46 on the Northern Divisions.
Similar differences prevail in other States. During 1874 the ave- rage cost of transporting a ton of freight one mile in New York varied from nine mills on the Erie and the New York Central to ten cents on the New York, Boston & Montreal Railroad; and, in the last report of the Louisville & Nashville Railroad, it is shown that the average cost of moving one ton of freight one mile varied from one and a quarter cents on the main line to over eight cents on their Glasgow branch.
