But until the Gentile (in this case, Dr. Charles and his school) . Does learn the secret of the Talmud and the Midrash, he will try in vain to solve the problem of the post~7o Judaism by the key of Apocalyptic alone. All he can discern is this, that after 70, the prevailing Judaism did not encourage the Apocalyptic type of teaching ; it therefore gradually disappeared and went elsewhere, to people who could better appreciate its peculiar qualities, and who no doubt looked upon it with more favour because Judaism did not like it.
