Awad (1977) and Willoughby (1972) used a needs reinforcement model to examine the factors affecting job satisfaction of programmer/analysts. Willoughby found satisfaction was highest when high levels of ability utilization, achievement, advancement, creativity, recognition, responsibility, company fairness, social status, and supervisor fairness were present. Awad applied the needs reinforcement model to both programmers and analysts in one company. He found no differences in needs between programmers and analysts.
