It was customary for women not to attend burials, nor none of the relatives of the deceased, but at Pat- terson's funeral there were hundreds of the...m there and they have been attending funerals ever since. The Cubans wanted to carry his coffin on their shoul- ders, as was their custom, but the commander of the post would not permit this. He was buried with mil- itary honors, having three volleys fired over his rest- ing place. The regimental chaplain, Rev.
