The Jablochkoff candle, then, has in itself a cause of ex- tinction, which is but the exaggeration of that which pro- duces the excessive variations in the light, and, to overcome this cause of extinction, it is necessary to employ a material not only refractory at ordinary heat, but also capable of with- standing the strains due to the voltaic arc.
