I do not doubt that these arguments might be multiplied, and perhaps be thought strong enough to make a powerful case against the Augustan epoch of the poem. My own impression — I will not say conviction — is on the other side. Elaborate apologies of this kind become less and less effective in proportion as they are removed from the age of the person they defend. No one can believe the hexameter Panegyric of Piso to have been composed long after Piso's death.
