In that age of chivalry a young and beautiful woman couldeasily find defenders whatever might be her claims. Isabella soonrallied around her banner many Hungarian nobles, and a large number ofadventurous knights from Poland.

Ferdinand, thus defrauded, and conscious of his inability to rescue thecrown from the united forces of the Hungarian partisans of Stephen, andfrom the Turks, condescended also to send a message to the sultan, offering to hold the crown as his fief and to pay to the Porte the sametribute which John had paid, if the sultan would support his claim. Theimperious Turk, knowing that he could depose the baby king at hispleasure, insultingly rejected the proposals which Ferdinand hadhumiliated himself in advancing.
