The novella ties in to a series of novels featuring Inspector John Carlyle, an Inspector working out of the police station at Charing Cross.
The first novel, “London Calling”, was published in 2011. Early on in that book, there is a flashback to Carlyle’s experiences as a young officer in the middle of the mineworkers’ strike, which was a major industrial dispute in Britain in the 1980s.
In the book, you see what happens after Carlyle gets hit on the head with a bric...k. “The Enemy Within” covers the days up to that point.
How important are the 1980s to the Carlyle series?
They are a key part of the Carlyle backstory - it was when he was starting out in his career. And, by British standards, it was a very aggressive, confrontational and hostile period. Inevitably, that has helped shape his somewhat cynical world view.
