From this busy day we gather that all the day-hours were sung ; matins and lauds were recited, except on feast days, when the whole or parts were sung accord- ing to the solemnity ; tierce, vespers, and com- pline were sung morosius ; the rest rotundius ; but... the Benedictus and the Magnificat always valde solemniter, except on the great feasts, when they too were sung. The bells chimed at the Te Deuin. During the meditation the monks knelt, facing their stalls and having their hoods up. The little office of our Lady was recited eveiy^ day, till Benedict XIV. , in 1748, released them from the obligation. The conventual mass, sung every day, DD. Mart^ne and Durand tell us, was celebrated avec beaucoup de majeste. This, coming from monks- ST. GREGORY'S MONASTERY 213 fresh from the hturgical glories of French and German abbeys, is praise indeed.
