Yet, in spite of all his gifts, it is impossible not to feel that he, and such as he, were depressing, to a calami- tous extent, both the English Church and the estimation in which it was held. All was spoilt in him by the absence of some higher qualities, such as might be reasonably looked for in any bishop. To speak of an utter secularity in his tone of mind might give a wrong impression. One or two e...ssential truths of Christianity had undoubtedly a firm hold upon his mind. But he would often acknowledge that he had no particular regard for any one church more than for another, or for any form of religion less wide than Christianity m general. A belief thus vague and abstract must at all events have an earnest spiritual element in it if it is greatly to influence the life. In Watson there was no appearance of this. To him faith was a teacher of good morals and a good hope for the future. There it ended : strong enough to preserve him from gross offence ; strong enough also to maintain in him a general good-will towards mankind ; but not strong enough to instil in him even a low sense of responsibility in the great office he had accepted, or to check his never-sated thirst for advancement and re- pute.
