CHRISTMAS-DAY.
THUS the merry Christmas-day Passes rapidly away, Swiftly as an eagle s wing, As they play and laugh and sing, Now around the sparkling hearth, Now upon the snow-clad earth.
Snow and sled and skate and ice Make a Winter-paradise. Oh, the hours glide swiftly by With such wings to help them fly !
Yet not selfish pleasures bind Generous children, heart and mind ; But they think of other s good, Who have scantier fare and food ; But they think upon the poor, Where few gifts go in the
... door ; And dividing theirs with such, Make what s left worth twice as much.
76 THE FIRE ON THE HEARTH THE POOR.
OH, that men would help the poor, Where few gifts go in the door ! They have not a Christmas-day, Though they live not far away ; Th hearth is cold, the table scant ; Sickness, poverty, and want Dwell there now and long have dwelt ; Where the snow-banks never melt, Where the sunbeams will not shine, There take Christmas bread and wine ! Ask not now if there were guilt ; Think of scanty fire and quilt, Think of woman, gentle-born, By the wolves of hunger torn, As she fought them day by day, For her children s sake alway ; For her husband, till her strength Failed her in the fight at length ; Think of her sweet children there Shivering in the wintry air, Huddling close to scanty hearth, On this day of Jesus birth, When their hearts should dance with mirth, When their little lips should sing With the joys which you might bring !
