The year 1814 saw also the birth of a society destined to have an extraordinary connec- tion with the growth of science in the Unit- ed 8tates generally — the Academy of Nat- ural Sciences of Philadelphia. This body commenced the publication of a Journal in May, ...1817, and in this first volume, as well as in all the succeeding ones, were publish- ed some of the most important papers on the animals, plants, and minerals of the country.
