Her story, simply stated, was of itself an eloquent appeal. Her husband and three sons, all she had, had enlisted. Her husband had been killed in battle. Could she ask less of the country to whom she had given so much than the return of her eldest son ? The Presi- dent heard this request, and said, "Certainly, if her prop was taken away, she was justly en- titled to one of her boys, " and he immediately wrote an order for the discharge of the eldest. She gratefully took the order, and sought him at the encampment of his regiment; but the burden of her sorrowing heart was increased on learning that the object of her love and search had been wounded in a recent battle, and lay sick in a hospital.
