Leaving Iowa in the fall of 1858, he emigrated to Oregon- -reaching that territory at ]S r ew Year, 1859. His first residence here was Roseburg, the capital of Douglas County, where he resumed the business of teaching, which he continued for fifteen months. During this time, through the kind- ness of Hon. S. F. Chadwick, then the County Judge, he had access to an excellent law library — a privilege of which he eagerly availed himself for the prosecution of legal study.
In the month of March, 18...60, at the term of the Circuit Court of the State, held in Douglas County, Mr. Mallory was admitted to practice as an attorney and counsellor-at-law.
