The Takaungu branch of the Mazrui had been founded by Hamis, the head of the younger branch of the clan. Since its establishment after the ex- pulsion from Mombasa in 1837, and throughout the period of Mbaruk of Gazi's long conflict with Zanzibar, the Takaungu Mazrui had been quietly growing in power and numbers. Hamis was succeeded by his brother Said, who was followed by Rashid and Salim, two sons of Ha...mis.
