O'Reilly and Bucarely seem to have been warm personal friends. Evidence of this is to be found in two legajos of correspondence of the viceroy, now in the Archivo General de Indias (88-5-17 and 88-5-18). The first of these legajos is composed for the most part of the O'Reilly-Bucarely correspondence between 1769 and 1775, with scattering let- ters for other years. During th
...is period each wrote to the other every month, and but few of their letters are missing.
Bucarely's letters are borradores, or drafts, and O'Reilly's are signed with his name and rubric. In each case the body of the letter is in the hand of a clerk, with corrections by Bucarely or O'Reilly, but there are lengthy postscripts in their own hands and in some cases entire letters. Al- though intimately personal, they dealt mostly with the affairs in New Spain, O'Reilly's interest being explained by the fact that he himself wished to become viceroy, and Bucarely wished it no less.
