It is said that in some communities the opposition of the whites nearly precluded negroes from investing in land. In other places the negroes tended to segregate themselves and to form close settlements. They acquired small tracts of land and affected to develop separate community life. Inquiry in all the counties visited by the writer disclosed that outside of the municipalities whose population were chiefly whites the chief negro communities were at George town Cross Roads in Kent and Sandy Springs in Mont gomery.
