Eighty-six years later the revocation of the Edict of Nantes was registered by the successors of these judges with- out a word of protest from any member of the courts.

The Cardinal was determined to exercise his power, and of any public sentiment which could sustain the resistance of the courts there were only scanty traces in the times of Richelieu. They were even unwilling to reg- ister the famous edict for the creation of the French academy, a curious instance of how perversely w r rongheaded the French judges often became when they got outside of their proper offi- THE FRENCH PARLIAMENTS.
