The military posts were already occupied by a well-organised National Guard ; and a proclamation of the au- thorities had enjoined the calmness and quiet which was rigidly observed. The crowd was so great, as to leave scarcely room for the cavalcade to pass ; but although the King must have seen very few friendly countenances among them, at least he did not hear a single word of insult ; nor could he be dissatisfied with the demeanor of the populace, unless he misconstrued it into a parade of g...enerosity. The National Guards again carried arms as the King advanced, and the salute was returned on the part of his attend- ants, with the usual military honours.
